Transforming Power Line Inspection: Harnessing AI and Drones in Vietnam

The electricity network is expanding day by day. This daily expansion has led to human-based inspection methods making significant efforts to address the need for efficient network operation and maintenance. Inaccurate information, non-digital data, life risks for workers, and time-consuming manual inspection processes, maintenance, and repair of power lines are some of the problems the current methods of inspection of power transmission lines have.

Like many other industries that have been helped by artificial intelligence, this industry has also been affected by this technology. By using artificial intelligence algorithms, machine vision, and deep learning, as well as by using drones to observe and inspect power transmission lines, many of the problems of current methods can be reduced.
In an article published in Springer in September 2023, accessible from this link, “Springer – Using Drone and AI Application for Power Transmission Line Inspection and Maintenance: A Case Study in Vietnam, “studies have been conducted for the use of drones in the monitoring system of Vietnam’s power transmission lines. In this study, drones take images, and then the images are sent to the processing department. And the required information will be sent from this department to the relevant officials. Of course, there were problems with this method, which can be mentioned as 4G disconnection in remote areas, the need for more drone batteries for long distances, and the time-consuming training of human resources in using this technology.
